St. Patrick’s Day which was ORIGINALLY Ostara celebrated by the Celtics, was adapted and later became to be a Christian Holiday celebrating St. Patrick who is credited with driving the “snakes” out of Ireland. Snakes are thought to be a representation of pagans, Celtics, Druids and gypsies. It was a solemn day celebrated by attending Mass at the Catholic Churches in mainland Ireland. The holiday took another turn in mid 19th century after a flux of Irish immigrants arrived in North America amist the Great Potato Famine and faced scrutiny, prejudice and persecution. The holiday developed into a more rowdy and boisterous celebration, a day Irish-Americans took to the streets to celebrate their resiliency, unity, pride and work ethic. This shirt design is made, as myself a pagan from Irish decent, to honor the resiliency of pagans in the face of systemic assimilation, prejudice and discrimination. It also honors the Irish immigrants who also faced these same obstacles. We, the snakes, are blessed and will not be driven away.
